Today I took a moment to listen to the rest of my new songs…. I’ve been working on ‘Familiar Girl’ for the last couple of weeks; it was interesting to see the contrast of a more arranged song compared to the rest. I like to work on all songs equally, so I will work on one song for some time, until I feel I need a break from it. Then when I come back, the experience, ideas and arrangements will have inspired something new. I won’t necessarily use the same tricks from one song to the next, but what I would have absorbed will translate over and make the songs grow simultaneously, in the same artistic direction.
So, … I also worked on a simple bass line for the ‘Chameleon’… nothing fancy, just a nice simple riff to accompany the verse. I’ve become pickier over time about the type of riffs I keep. I used to be satisfied as long as there was an idea that worked, but over time I realised when the riff is exciting in some way, it’s so much more pleasurable and satisfying… it sticks in your head, and it becomes somehow larger that the song; it takes on it’s own identity.
It takes time and patience; some days are easier than others. Sometimes I can sit for hours and nothing good will come out of it… Other days, I can write something that speaks to me in a matter of minutes. It’s all about inspiration, and understanding the importance of idea brewing over time…. If I try a couple of hours with no results, I know that my subconscious will be working for the rest of the day until the next time I sit down and something good will come out of it.
On a totally other subject… , I’ve still been keeping my regimen of juice making and staying fit (did another 30 min cardio today); and I’m feeling better over time!
